Assignment #1

Spotify

Spotify Analysis

Guiding question

My guided research question is what Spotify has done to separate themselves from other platforms like Apple Music and SoundCloud. After researching more and ideas that I came up with I concluded 2-4 factors that I personally enjoy about Spotify more than other platforms. The first factor is the group sessions. The group session is where you create a session and can send an invite link through text, email or any other way to a friend, and you can queue up songs together in the car or even just share the songs if they are in their house and you are in yours. When playing video games or just hanging out I’ll use this with some of my friends. Another factor is the collaborative playlist feature. I used this with a friend and my staff at the pool. We made I believe a 60–70-hour playlist of songs that we enjoyed and that other people at the pool wanted to hear. There were different genres mixed in and had a lot of suggestions from patrons throughout, everyone liked it except some of the older people so we added songs they would like. The next feature is Spotify premium. Almost if not all other platforms have a subscription option or service. Spotify’s premium subscription is free trial then $9.99/monthly. You, like other subscription services, can cancel anytime. The premium family is where family members living under the same house can have up to 6 premium accounts. This is what my family uses. We all have an individual account but under the same payment plan. The fourth feature that I believe separates Spotify from others is the creator base. Spotify has a very good connection to its artists. There’s a period where the song gets checked then will be put up on Spotify. I’ve heard mixed opinions on the pay from Spotify but that is because of streams, saves and shares of the song. Spotify has a bigger base of listeners that Apple Music and SoundCloud. Spotify also supports their artists by recommending them in playlists. This is how I got to listen to a lot of my favorite artists. Spotify overall has a great plan and knows what they are doing and what they want this platform to be.

My connection to Spotify

I have been using Spotify for more than 6 years. First, I used it frequently without buying Spotify premium. After less than a month I paid for premium cause i use it so much. We have a family plan where multiple accounts can be under the same premium plan.  Since then, I have used Spotify every day. I will use it for practice, getting ready for games, parties, other activities. I suggest that everyone buys Spotify, especially premium. The features and content on Spotify premium are worth paying for.

importance and culture of Spotify

I believe that Spotify is important because of the culture and how it brings people together. Music is something that everyone can agree on and have a common interest in. It can start friendships, it has for me, more like strengthening friendships. We all have similar music interests. My friend Jonah and I have very similar if not same favorite genres, playlists, and artists. We both like rap during the day and before games or meets. Then chill music we can play during late night car rides. We use the group session to queue songs, and we like the ones we both put. Spotify also is important to me for how much time I spend doing work I listen to music in the background to help me focus on schoolwork or training for sports. Also, to have in the background while I’m in my room just hanging out. I believe that many others would agree with me and would share similar reasons to how Spotify is important to them as well. Spotify culturally is shown within the genres and other songs that can be shared between other groups of people.

How the platform works

The platform works as an app and on any device. This Spotify Home Screen on the app version (image below) and this is Spotify on the laptop (image below). On the mobile version at the Home Screen there is different tabs or options. At the top is setting and your account. Under is your most recent played songs, podcasts or playlists. Under recently played is new releases by artists you listen to or that are similar songs you listen to that Spotify suggests for you to listen to. Further down is playlists that Spotify “makes” for you that they think you would like the music. There’s recommended for today which is based off what you listened to in the past 24+ hours. There are also popular albums that’s suggested whether you have listened to all or some or none at all of the album. There’s a search feature that when you click on it has genres that pop up then the search bar. Then is the library option that has your playlists, songs and podcasts. The app and laptop versions are very easy to navigate and use.

How is Spotify intended

The app I’d say has an intended user being from young teens to middle aged. The range is very young to older. I know grandparents and younger kids that use Spotify because it was made for everyone and not just one specific target market. However, I’d say a lot more of teens- Middle Ages adults use Spotify as they listen to music a lot more and can and willing to spend the money for Spotify premium. I got Spotify when I was 13 and used it since and other people my age use it. The app can be used for just hanging out with friends, car rides, parties, anything. Also, for just listening to a podcast or radio show. There is no limit to the app, it seems to just keep cycling through which is good. There’s no end to music cause how many songs and albums there are in so many varieties of genres.
